Maschine Mikro Mk3 with EZ Drummer 3 and Reaper - Help with Midi

Hi folks, I’m just getting started on my finger drumming journey and having some trouble understanding the setup needed. I have a Maschine Mikro Mk3 and using it with EZ Drummer 3 and Reaper. This is my first time working with midi in any format so might have missed something simple. I also haven’t used EZ Drummer 3 or Reaper that much yet and definitely not much together.

This is what I’ve done:

  • Created the suggested QFD pad mapping in EZ Drummer 3.
  • Recording myself playing in EZ Drummer 3.
  • Dragged the midi file across to a new track in Reaper.
  • Added EZ Drummer 3 as FX on the track in Reaper.

The problem I’m having is that the open hi-hat (note 21) when looking in EZ Drummer 3 is getting changed to the high tom (note) 26 in the midi in Reaper.

If I record directly in Reaper I don’t have the issue. The reason I’m recording in EZ Drummer 3 and dragging the midi over is because I want to use the Grid Editor in EZ Drummer 3.

Any ideas please?

Is it possible to use the NI Controller Editor with the Mikro Mk3?

I have a different workflow: I didn’t change the MIDI mapping of my Drum plugins, but instead I created templates and pad pages in the Controller Editor. I have a dedicated Template for finger drumming and different pad pages for the Drum VSTs that I use.

That has worked well for me so far. But I frequently need to open the Controller Editor to change my Template, because switching that directly on the Maschine Mk3 is somehow broken.

Thank you, yes it is. I haven’t really used it yet as keen to get playing and not really mentioned in the setup guide. Will see how I go as don’t know how to use it yet :upside_down_face:.

Really not sure what I’m supposed to be doing. This is what I see after changing the Type of Hit to “Control Change”

I think the only other thing I’ve done in the Controller Editor was to play with the overall Pad Sensitivity in Preferences, change Colour Value of the pad to match what Rob shows and changed the Type of Press to “None” on a couple of pads to see what that did (it helped with cymbals not chocking).

Not sure how changing anything here will impact what I’m doing?

Edit: making the change to Control Change meant nothing worked in EZD3. I now know it’s a totally different message and would need to be mapped again in EZD3 so I think I’m back to square one.

And now I seem to have “broken” using the Mikro in Reaper as it’s no longer recognising it.

Think I might have finally figured it out and guessing the issue I was experiencing is a bug in EZ Drummer 3 E-drums midi mapping. I’m thinking it’s a bug as every other drum component I remapped in EZD3 was working just fine and if you recorded directly in Reaper with EZD3 as the FX (not via EZD3) it also worked fine.

I’ve taken @Fannon suggestion (thank you :+1:) of mapping in NI Controller Editor and have done the following:

EZD3 - E-Drums page

  • Set EZD3 e-drum midi map back to ‘Toontrack Standard’.
  • Played the corresponding kit piece in EZD3 an look at what the note number is. For example, in the picture below, the note number for ‘Open Edge 3’ is 26.

NI Controller Editor

  • In NI Controller Editor, on the Assign tab, double click the white box next to where it says ‘Note’ and type in the note number 26 and press Enter. The editor will change it to the corresponding musical note (in this instance D0).
  • Rename the Pad in the white box next to where it says ‘Pad 10’ to make it easier to ID what you’ve mapped.

The quirk with doing it this was is where you have the same drum component mapped to more than one pad, when you hit one of them, any other pad with same component also lights up. Eg, if you hit the kick on pad 3, both pads 2 and 3 light up, instead of just pad 3. It’s throwing me off a little bit when looking at the pads, but will probably get used to it. At lease I can use the benefits of EZD3 grid editor now knowing I can put what I’ve recorded into Reaper.

Hey @Robert_Mathijs - might be worth linking to this post in the setup guide " Other drum software besides AD2". What you have is correct and worked for the most part except for the open hi-hat which is really weird. I think I used up a good few hours of practice time and hopefully this last post makes sense (happy to update if it doesn’t).

Great, you’ve figured it out! Sorry, the screenshot and description I shared was not very descriptive, so thanks for writing it up properly.

Btw. you can also export/import such templates. I do this also for backup, because sometimes my Maschine is a little bit forgetful about changes I did in the Controller Editor

All good.

Thanks for the tip. Just exported it.

Ok I will! The method you described is something I also talk about and demonstrate in the beginner course setup lesson by the way: https://questforgroove.com/course/beginnercourse/basic-setup/installation/
