Can anyone recommend a good lofi hiphop preset in AD2? I’m browsing through but haven’t stumbled on one yet. On a side note is there a 3rd party preset store for AD2 presets?
Thanks!
Hi el_camello, welcome to the forum.
For the kit, I recommend one of the jazz or funk presets. For the kick, use small velocities, or just turn down the kick volume in ad2. Also small overhead, and no to minimal room. For effects, you can add some noise/distortion in ad2, but the effects there are quite limited and it’s just much easier to set them up in your daw.
First, you will need a low pass filter: the rx950 from inphoniok emulates the butterworth filter pretty good. It also gives you the 12-bit resolution (emulates the akai s950). Then you will need some vinyl and magnetic noise, maybe even some distortion. rc-20 retro color from xln audio (so same as ad2) is just perfect for this. If you want to have even a lower fi and warmer sound, some plugin that emulates a stereo tape recorder comes handy; ik multimedia’s Tape Machine 440 is really good (emulates the Ampex AG440B).
Don’t forget to be not accurate with the drums. Definitely don’t quantize, and don’t follow the metronome too strictly. Make it almost swingy.
I never actually made lo-fi before, but this is just a small demonstration I made in a few mins using the techniques I described above:

Of course, the sound can be improved a lot with for example adding more transients and more low with some nice analog mastering equalizer.
The “too old for school” preset from Fairfax 1 is very epic and lofi!
