FGDP-50 in Section 2 > Lesson 1

Hello, I finbd myself havgin just entered Section 2 > Lesson 1 (no doubt more thanks to my subscription payment than my skills  ).
I have adopted Rob’s layout and now I have the choise if playing the toms on the RGB pads or where Yamaha placed them.
If I play the toms on the RGB pads, I find myself forced to change to finger on the high hat (which I usually play with middle finger or 3 using piano notation) to thumb to 1 - which allows to play the toms with 2 or 3.
If I play the toms on the regular pads, maybe the the fingering is a bit easier:
High Hat with 3, Open Hat with 2, all toms with thumb.

Thoughts ?

Best,

Ciccio

I figured it would be a good exercise to teach my fingers to move around the board. So I didn’t change the layout.

Totally unrelated to me not having figured out yet how to change the layout.

I would use the FGDP toms and skip trying to play the hi hat at the same time. If you accept the tradeoff of not being able to play the hi hat you can play the toms with each finger on one tom, which is the way it was intended. You will notice if you just rest your hand on the toms the hi tom will be index, mid tom middle and low tom will be ring finger.

That’s just the way to play toms on the yamaha. That other way ont he rgb pads is a way to mimic a 4x4 controller, but on the same page where I outline that layout in the beginner course I also state that I recommend using the yamaha tom layout.

Ok, I read your comment on the beginner course more like:
“change layout in order to follow the lessons but also play aorund with the original layout”
I guess that if I keep the layout unchanged (which I think I will do), I will have to accept the tradeoff and my mind after a while will translate your 4x4 diagrams into fgdp layout.

After-thought: thinking about it, I can play the toms with left hand only (hitting twice on the same tom) and right hand is free to play the hi hat and the open hat.

i’m just getting back into my lessons, and have been ‘restarting’ my daily lessons from Section 2, Lesson one. was driving myself crazy trying to play the tom and HH at the same time. by just playing the toms … breezy. such a simple solution. thanks.

Yes I do the same thing! It’s just not possible to do it well with the FGDP layout, but in terms of a solid drum part… nobody cares to be honest if they hear a hi hat when you’re playing a tom fill. It’s different but not better or worse.
