I’ve watched quite a few of the courses and am really stoked to have just received my Maschine Mikro MK3 today.
I’m familiar (from the YouTube vids and courses) with how to use MIDI mode on the MM3 and Controller Editor to trigger my drum kits, but I’m also aware I can load my drum VST (Superior Drummer 3 in my case, probably also one or more of the Abbey Road ones and some other percussion libraries) into Maschine and have each of the pads send the MIDI to the drum kit.
I recall reading that using Maschine to trigger samples isn’t nearly as expressive if you’re loading samples into Maschine and just triggering hits. Makes sense if they are single samples and velocity just triggers an amplitude bump up/down.
But am I correct in assuming that loading SD3 (or AD2, Abbey, etc) as a plugin into Maschine and triggering it from the pads with a QFG layout to send MIDI, would be equivalent to Maschine in MIDI mode? ie, all of the nuance of cross-fading deeply sampled drums, triggering articulations with velocity, aftertouch, etc, are all the same?
If so, are there other trade/offs to consider between these two ways of fingerdrumming?
I’ll do some playing around, but I’m just wondering if I’m on the right track.
Thanks!

Yeah if you run the plugin inside Maschine and then just set it up (I made a video about this) you’ll have the same as what youd do with midi mode. I personally always use midi mode because I do not like maschine software as an environment for creating music, but thats personal.

Thanks, Robert.
I agree that Maschine is a big bag of mystery for creating music, at least compared to the way that I normally think about it. I’m willing to give it a little time to see if it clicks.
It’s good to know that it’s equivalent in terms of triggering drums, once it’s set up.

In my case I use Ezdrummer2. I use it standalone while practicing. Offcourse you will need to launch it as a plugin inside daw if you want to produce a complete song.

I started using MT Drummer, which the cut down version is free and that works well. It’s said to be an alternative to EzDrummer 2, if like me you don’t want to spend any more dosh at the moment having spent quite a lot on the Mikro Mk3. However, I have loaded up a drum rack in my DAW (Ableton) with one shots of the drum sounds that I want putting them in the format for the Q4G lessons. I’ve added some compression, EQ and light reverb and I think that sounds better than the MT Drummer. I have them both in a project on separate tracks dedicated to finger drumming for the lessons. This works very well for me.
Its good to see more people posting, welcome @tluanga34 I’m sure that you will find this helpful. I have.

@tluanga34, you are welcome. In case you haven’t found them here is the link.

There is also another freebie, but I haven’t made much use of it as yet. No real need. Its called Drum Mic’a, the link is: - https://en-uk.sennheiser.com/drummica by sennheiser. This one works inside NI’s Kontact, its not straight forward to setup and get working but I have tested the sounds and they are quite good too. If you have an NI controller, you will already have Kontact installed.
Sonviox are knocking out there Big Bang and Cinimatic Drums for $69 each, https://sonivoxmi.com/products/details/big-bang-universal-drums-2 , but Plugin Boutique - https://www.pluginboutique.com/products/1848-Big-Bang-Universal-Drums?currency=GBP&force_country=GB&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6ar4BRDnARIsAITGzlDoQ9GRdkW0Chb1SeWoRatdu-ZJElnzMx9_Ej02Io3VF2YJ3LoQUw8aAuG4EALw_wcB#a_aid=57ef7faf6caa0 are knocking the same out for £30.00.
Finally, if you want to build your own kits with one shots in drum racks, there are reams of them out there, look in places like Loopmaster, slice and many more. You can get those from completely free or $10 upwards to around $200. However, if I were intending to spend $200 I would probably follow @Robert_Mathijs advice and pay for Addictive Drums 2.
Hope this helps, so many options and you can make them sound almost how you would like them too.
