Setting default values for CC controls in Addictive Drums 2

I love that I’m able to set how open or closed the high hat is using a CC control (a knob) within AD2 using my physical midi devices (Xjams). But one thing drives me crazy: Any time I switch drums sounds, I have to reset these values (rejigger the knobs while listening) because the default is whatever the CC=0 value is (a closed hihat), and I want it partially open. Has anyone figured out how to set this default so that the CC value (whether set by hardware or software in AD2 or even a DAW) is configured correctly (i.e. where I want it from the outset, not just whatever CC=0 value happens to be)?

Thanks :),

I think if you have the cc midi value inside your DAW track set at a specific value and you are in that spot in the timeline you will actually get for example an open hi hat. So it’s about where you start playing / recording in the timeline and whether you programmed a midi cc value in that spot.

Hi David,

I actually had contact with XLN about this (or at least similar to your issue) in january, this was their reply:

(my question)

I use AD2 in Ableton, in combination with a Maschine 3 controller. I used to have the hihat and ride pads mapped to “tip”, but now switched to using the CC mapping, so I can (slightly) open the hihat with the encoders, and change the ride from tip to shaft. This works well and gives more freedom.

There is a problem however. AD2 does not remember the last received CC when re-opening an ableton session.
The hihat defaults to fully closed (which is OK, but I would prefer it to remember what CC I sent it last). For the ride it’s worse: it defaults to shaft, even though I use it in tip position 95% of the time. (“CC reverse” or inverting the range do not change this behaviour). So when I open a session and don’t send any CC, all my kits play the ride on the shaft.

Is it possible to change the default to which the ride changes? If not, will you consider changing this in an update? (preferably, by having AD2 remember the last received CC).

(their reply)

Thank you for contacting us. I’m afraid that it’s not possible to change defaults or make AD2 remember the last sent CC messages. The most common way of using CC messages with AD2 is with an e-drum foot controller for the hi-hat and the Ride pad sending a positional message depending on where you hit the pad. With that setup you don’t trigger a CC note without also sending a CC value (or at least being aware of the hi-hat lid being closed).

I can totally see how the settings you asked for would be good to have with your setup. I will save your request with the product team for future consideration. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you.

In the meantime I came to the same conclusion as Robert: “re-jigger” the controls, or programming the CC in the timeline, are the 2 solutions that exist right now. I also changed my ride to “tip” instead of CC, which limits freedom but is right most of the time for me.

(I could also imagine a solution with Bome’s Midi Translator, which I use, which can store and resend CC’s whenever you switch presets, but this would be a little more involved, and stop working when you don’t have Bome’s open when playing - which would be an unwelcome surprise during a performance for example)

Many thanks, both ArtsTheBeatdoctor and Robert. I’m basically right there with you both at this point.

Also, this is sooooo true: “For the ride it’s worse: it defaults to shaft, even though I use it in tip position 95% of the time.”

Yeah Ride shaft is terrible. I never use it.
