Mobile Rig: Beta Version 0.9

Ok, I’ve made major progress on my 2 Xjam mobile rig. The addition of Bluetooth MIDI hosts+batteries (in my pockets), and a far more stable surface. Now the device plays as I want it to play, although there’s still work to be done in making the rig a bit nicer, visually. This felt like something I could get good at, and play as I wish in a live band setup. The only limitations are those of my own ability.

Here’s a short video of me jamming:

Here’s a short video of me explaining the rig:

Here’s a pic of the materials (the black underneath are velcro thigh supports (two velcro’d together), plus a large, extremely strong plastic tray. There are two batteries, and two MIDI Bluetooth hosts. The laptop connects to both of them, no problem. I run everything through Ableton.

I’m using two xjams, and they are laid very similarly to the FGDP layout: symmetric (but obviously hands separated), with toms underneath the snares, and bass below that.

Also, having the pads on the top of your legs like that, with your arms hanging down is clearly a nice ergonomical setup. For me it would not be practical teaching but honestly… i might prefer this over a desk for just grooving and playing.

That’s exactly right. It’s meant to be more ergonomic, more fun!, and mobile. So you can play with people or just jam out. If a passage is more difficult, one can always stand still and focus (just like guitar players do for a solo, etc.).

For my money, I hate playing at a desk, and notice my wrists fatiguing pretty quickly, whereas, if I’m playing all slacked-out on the couch, then my hands and arms are mostly resting. This mobile rig simulates that.
