I’m talking about this free tutorial: https://questforgroove.com/funky-drummer/
Although Rob’s beat is already super nice and funky, I wanted to play it like how Clyde Stubblefield did it. I mean the notes of course. I’m never going to play it like Clyde Stubblefield lol.
I really like the QFG drumpad notation, because it’s super intuitive and helps a lot when learning a new beat, so I modified it to what I think is the “original” funky drummer beat (I hope it’s not a problem for Rob).

Modified version:
I think it sounds like the original, what do you guys think?

I hear the open hihat on the Two & and Four &
So 1e&a2e [&] a3e&a4e [&] a. But I might be mistaken. It’s a funky sounding open hihat
I know why i got it wrong byt the way. I actually learned the beat a long time ago from David Haynes and he plays it with the open hihat that way. Very good >> https://youtu.be/028ckVzgZFY?t=57
That’s why it was in my head… I thought it was so weird I got it wrong because I thought I “knew” it by heart but I guess I knew Davids version.

Can be, I’m also not fully confident about it! Also, I’m sure he didn’t play it 100% the same all the time… I tried to replicate https://youtu.be/AoQ4AtsFWVM?t=322 .There are even some parts of the song where he played the beat with an open hihat also at the 2[e] (so 3 in total).
That’s why it was in my head…
I see! The video is cool, and also the whole channel! Thanks for sharing.
