Hi everyone.
It has been 2 weeks since I found QFG on youtube and consequently the website. I am glad there is a forum where we can share plenty of stuff.
GEAR:
After doing some research I came to the conclusion that I will probably order the Launchpad Pro MK3. I also pondered the Nektar Aura, a Maschine Mikro and obviously the Maschine MK3.
I already have the Maschine Jam (which does not have pad sensitivity), and Komplete 11 Ultimate with a bunch of drum sounds. The reason I am choosing the Launchpad over another Maschine controller is, that I feel that having a 8x8 pad will allow me to be much more creative and also play instruments or launch samples while finger drumming. I wish there was a Drum Pad with at least one octave of proper piano keys attached to the bottom
WHY FINGER DRUMMING:
Curiously, the reason I got myself into finger drumming it’s similar to Robert’s reason. I am (or was) a musician (in hibernation for quite some years now) and I used to struggle a lot when I needed some rhythm or drums in my compositions. I (used to properly) know how to play piano, accordion, saxophone and a tiny little bit of trumpet, but I always felt I needed to learn how to play drums to actually finish my songs. Now that I discovered finger drumming I guess my problem will be solved.
PRACTICING:
I developed my practicing technique which consists of playing Robert’s lessons:
- like they are proposed
- mirroring (play the dominant hand part with the non-dominant hand…) - this is highly brain freezing but hugely worth to suffer for
- different speeds and grooves (including alternating speeds within the same exercise)
- changing the fingers that play each pad to my liking
- different velocities (will only be possible when I get the Launchpad)
- little improvisations in between the main beat when I already fell comfortable playing the exercise
- try to play the whole exercise (or a big part of it) with only one hand if my skills allow it
I believe that varying the exercises as much as possible and with different methods will be useful for the future when things get more complicated.
PERSONAL OPINION:
I am a big fan of the alternating fingers method (sorry Robert ) I am very familiarized with this method and accordion players use it all the time, and without it they wouldn’t be able to play certain songs that need extreme finger speed. This applies to playing different pads with different fingers, or even when playing the same pad twice (or more), with different fingers. I guess that I am used to the accordion techniques (which I must admit are very handy for finger drumming). I’m finally glad that I was “gently” tapped in my hand by the teacher when I forgot to alternate fingers while taking accordion lessons as a kid
The next video shows you the huge power of the alternating fingers method when applied to the accordion (i suggest you to slowdown the playback speed otherwise you won’t be able to see his fingers moving accordingly):
Who knows what could eventually this method do for finger drummers?
PLANS:
After receiving the launchpad, start over again all the free lessons and exercises from the beginning until it all gets memorized, and eventually became a Patron
Thank you for reading,
Cheers
