Finger assignment for cool Tom-based beat

Hi Robert,

I came across a cool tom-based beat in AD2 (it’s the “Tom” variation of “American Rock Beat 02"). It’s been a minute since I wasn’t sure how map my fingers. If you take a look, you’ll see that there’s tom+hihat+bass.

Curious how you (or anyone!) would approach this from the perspective of finger assignment.

Thanks,
-David

Wherever I get a strong rhythm going on something like Toms, cowbell etc. I tend to think in terms of hands rather than finger. So I would probably play the Kick, Snare and HH on my right hand and the tom groove on my left.

Makes perfect sense if the bpm isn’t too high. The suggested bpm is 101, so this might be at the upper limit of what I’m capable of, for speed on a single hand.

I’ll give that a try and see how it feels. :folded_hands:

I’ll continue to try to hit the toms with a single hand, as it feels more generalizable to other patterns (and perhaps as a means for developing Moeller). But honestly, 100bpm is just too fast for me unless I’m “peck typing” the toms with my index finger. Plus, the dynamics of that particular riff are really aided by alternating hands. So I’ve been learning a bespoke fingering for the hihat/bass/tom combo on the dominant hand.

Cool beat, if I understood the tabs correctly!

Try regular alternating hands.

But I would play the hi-hat with my ring finger (quarter notes aren’t that hard to play with ring ). With the exception of the hit with the snare drum (here it is better to play as usual - middle finger on the hi-hat, index finger on the snare).

Everything else is played as usual alternating hands: bass drum with thumbs, toms with index fingers.

This applies to “FGDP“ layout where toms located above the bass drum.
