Repetition and review

I made through the lessons leading up to “Let’s Hit the Gym”. I wanted to pass on a tip that I found useful. Before moving on I decided to go back through all the lessons and review them just to cement them in place, but without spending as much time. I was surprised at how easy everything came back. I was pleased at the level of recall. Even the bonus part of lesson six, which initially was a struggle. So I would definitely recommend quick reviews of each section to other people. It worked for me.

Great tip and not just for QFG, it works well with anything you are learning.

So true. It takes some repetition to cement things in place. I just had to refresh on Native Instruments Polyplex. Kind of an interesting synth based drum program based on Reaktor.

In my experience there’s (roughly) three types of repetition.

  • You need to practice regularly (5 times a week) with sleep in between to create the short term repetition that makes your brain hardwire the new stuff you’re learning.
  • The medium interval is sort of what Ratskins is describing. Cementing everything in place by going over a “course” again quickly
  • Finally, you can “come back” to old stuff you’ve learned, and simply because of the fact that you’ve changed as a musician and human being you will see the old material in a different light, approach it in a different way etc. Which would also further your development.
