Let's hit the gym Workout A - Counting pattern

Hi, I’m working on a clapping with gap exercise at Workout A in Let’s hit the gym course.

When counting along with gap, I found it’s much easier to fill gap if I count out “one a two a…” instead of just “one two…”, or use my foot to tap 8th note.
I guess both are natural movement when you actually play music, but I’m feeling like they are probably a kind of “cheating” given the whole point of this lesson is to train mental muscle.

What do you guys think?
