A technique for learning how to play quietly

Thought I’d share a tip I discovered from trial and error. If you wanna learn to play softly —which I’ve found to be much more difficult than just mindlessly jamming on the pads—turn the volume up on your system until it irritates you. That way, it forces you to play softly. This works remarkably well.

Now, I’m using Xjam pads, which are quite subtle, so pad sensitivity is definitely important here. Until I used this trick/technique, I didn’t quite realize how sensitive the xjam pads really were!

Great advice! With amplifies music there is always a risk to either play to hard (because the sound is too soft) or too soft (because the sound is too loud). So being aware of that and then using it to your advantage for practice is a great idea.

The acoustic sound of your hands hitting the pads is always a useful tool in your practice toolbox too!
