Hi. I am really wanna learn finger druming and don’t know what to choose. I understand that 16 pads is better and versatile, also all lesson here is based on it, but for begginer like me is it ok to start on 8 pads? Cause for 2 or 3 months its gonna be enought i think to learn basics. And at some point i feel that i wanna upgrade to 16 pads. So should i buy 8 or just go easy way?
For my 2¢ I would definitely recommend 16.
@AKh, If you intend learning through @Robert_Mathijs you probably need 16 pads as all the course lessons are based on at least 16 pads with a 16 pad layout. It really depends on your budget as to what you go for and what you want to use the controller in addition to finger drumming.
The cheapest, particularly if your budget is quite small, is the AKAI 218 which starts at around £69 (British pounds) not sure what the dollars are for that. If you are using Ableton LIve as your DAW, then you might want to look at Novations Launchpad x or Pro64. That will give you a 64 pads for finger drumming but it works really well as a controller for Ableton. The Native Instrumets Machine range of pads are really nice, good quality pads but as a controller for a DAW its not so good.
I hope that gives you a starting point to explore your shopping options. Good luck.
I have found out so many times that when I go for the lower end of the scale, for whatever new thing I am learning, very soon I am upgrading to what I should have bought at first. And now I have the original item AND the one I should have bought. Better to go one step above what you think you need. It’s cheaper than disappointment.
Week ago bought Presonus Atom and really happy that i choose 16 pad. Also try AKAI 218 but Atom is more sensitive. Can’t see how i would play on 8 pad, cause even with 16 I limited of adding some fancy sounds. I decided to change QFG pad layout just a little bit for my style of playing, and it look like this
@AKh, its good that you are happy with the Atom. I lookd at that but wasn’t sure about it, glad to hear a positive review. Interesting layout, but obvioiusly won’t work with the course material that Rob provides. Layouts are easy to create, save and change. Good luck with it all.
