Any recommendations on posture? Robert looks like he is standing in most of the videos, and I know I like to stand when I am djing so I can see what is going on, dance when I have the chance and to look like I’m working. What about fingerdrumming? No need to sit down when the fingers are working the kick and hats, right? Unless you’ve got pedals like I think David Haynes uses. But then again, standing is tiring.
For me standing is by far the best. I do have a lesson (you have to log in) in the beginner course that explains some other things like keeping the wrists straight.
I’m sitting in the picture but you can obviously do this standing.
I also saw someone else post a picture of axtually angling the controller so you can stand up and instead of having your arms at a 90 degree angle you can put the controller lower and then your arms are straight(er) almost perpendicular to your body as well as your wrists. That might be prett ergonomic too.
The posture I recommend now is basically how someone would play piano.
I’m 6’4”. Most tables are a bit low if I’m standing. Are there instrument stands for the controller that anyone has experience with? It’d need to be sturdy…
Well not so easy solution, but in work we have electric table where I practise :))
I bought a stand from Hola Music. It is awesome. Like a tank. It’s the heavy duty one.
This has been what I have been aiming for. The aspect I’m having to work to correct is not having my wrists straight rather than turned where the inside of the wrists are closer (top left in @Robert_Mathijs photo above).
I also want to mention that I’m getting some fantastic improvement from also keeping my wrists relaxed, which I learned from my keys instructor. I think this helps with remaining relaxed overall, which I know I’ve heard Rob talk about in one of the courses or maybe a YT post.
Speaking for myself, this is helping my accuracy/precision and even more so it seems to be really reducing the time it takes me to get a new pattern or technique down.
This one? HPS-300B Heavy Duty Professional Multi-Purpose DJ Tripod Stand - Lapto – Hola! Music
It’s sold out
That’s the one, but sorry to hear it’s sold out. I guess the word got out among the millions of finger drummers! I don’t know where you live, but I bought mine through Amazon.
Aha. Amazon does still have them. The odd part is they’re being sold by Hola through Amazon, but the Hola site claims they’re sold out…
BTW, I’m guessing you went with the 300B instead of the lighter one to be sure it would hold up under pounding? And did you have any issues with the shallow lip on the tray?
Edit: Oh, I just realized you didn’t say what controller you have. I’ve got a Maschine - maybe I should measure…
I have a launchpad X and an Presonus Atom. The lip of the stand doesn’t get in the way. I got the bigger one and it handles all sorts of pounding. I am amazed at these folks that play on their laps sitting in a lawn chair! I can’t stand any sort of movement of the controller. I also got an adjustable barstool from IKEA so I can sit sometimes. I got inspired watching David Haynes sitting with his controller clamped to a snare stand. If now my music could sound as good as my practice area looks…
I just did some research on various stands, and the 300B would work. The only catch is that the lowest height is still a few inches too tall for me, assuming I’m sitting, anyway. It’s funny you mention laps, because the best height I’ve found so far is on my lap with my feet on something so my thighs are horizontal.
Yes, it’s true. It’s too high to sit at, but the seat I got from IKEA adjusts to be perfect sitting, or standing as a quick resting spot. It has a foot rest. It’s the LIDKULLEN in grey and black and looks so nice with the stand. When all this stuff is in a small apartment, it has to do double duty as decor. I imagine someday the pandemic will end and I’ll be able to have people come over again.
I play standing.
I use this laptop support in backwards direction, so my hands are in 30-45 degrees. I use my wrist weight and not really the fingers to play, just like I do in the piano.
Some stands I thought would be good, but more expensive:
And the most expensive, but if you’re really serious about it, why not?
