Change velocity and similar with FGDP-50?

I made it to Grooving and Improving lesson 4.1, in which it’s suggested to change the velocity curves.

I looked through the user manual ( FGDP-50 User Guide ), and it’s not clear if I should use the ‘kit edit’, or ‘pad edit’ settings.

It looks like there’s no way to make the fancy curves we see in the UI? I thought I’d make the left hihat (H1 in the trigger menu) be softer than H3. However, the user guide talks about midi out (I’m not using that, just using the built-in speaker, or headphones).

I tried setting a ‘loud2 tx’, as VelCurve but frankly, didn’t hear much difference. Lowering the ad gain from 46 to e.g. 25 did seem to have some difference, but then it’s impossible to get a loud note out of it.

FGDP-50 User Guide does show some curves, so would [menu] → Trigger → hit the right key → enter → Note → enter → VelCurve → Spline12 be a way to make it easier to make somewhat quiet notes but still having the full range?

I think spline 21 to 25 should do something similar by looking at the manual!

Some advice on the FGDP. Avoid using the onboard speaker to calibrate these settings - the speaker is convenient but does not have the dynamic range. Use headphones at a minimum. I would also calibrate these settings with addictive drums (via MIDI) as the best way to get a feel for the dynamics you can get out of the FGDP pads. The onboard sounds are good (via headphones) but not as subtle/ dynamic with low velocities. You can play with ADGain, the velocity curves, or even the minimum velocity for a pad to help you get the dynamics you are looking for. Trigger profiles are independent of kits so it’s the best place to dial in the feel you want - remember to save your custom trigger profile!
