Beginner Course first pattern counting

Hi,

noob here. awesome site fun stuff!

Shouldn’t the count on the very first pattern in the Beginner Course be 1 & 2 & , not 1 a 2 a ?

Typically a beat is broken into 1 e & a 2 e & a etc… but in the video example for that exercise he uses “a” in the “&” spot.

What am I missing?

thanks!

Hey, you’re not missing anything!

I’m sorry about my counting. This is a stupid language thing since here in the Netherlands in “school” we count 1a2a3a4a for 8th notes. And we have a totally different way to count 16th notes.

So basically when I play a regular “8th note” beat (no 16th notes) I count it as 1a2a3a4a but it actually is 1&2&3&4&.

I’ve recorded so many videos and lessons now that I sort of cannot go back and correct this anymore.

I do count 16th notes and triplets correctly, so you can basically adhere to this rule to get through the lessons without too much trouble: If you see 1a2a3a4a it’s 8th notes.

There are some more stupid language things of which I learned after a couple of years I was doing them wrong. I use “crash” as a substitute for “cymbal” a lot and I say “downbeat” instead of “onbeat” and “afterbeat / upbeat” instead of “offbeat”.

So yeah… I think I am very thorough in teaching my method but there are some of these language things that show I never had a music education in English. So feel free to doublecheck if something is confusing. There will probably not be a lot that’s unclear, but some small things here and there.

I added a little info box to the first playing lesson in the Beginner Course to hopefully prevent future students from tripping over this. Thanks for reaching out about it.
