Hello all, this is my first post. I’m an avid FGDP-50 user and I have 3 of them! (don’t ask) I love the layout and I’m a beginner finger drummer so I don’t necessarily feel the limitations with sensitivity too bad. So, I am a fan!
While we all know the Micro-USB seems out of date on this device, the biggest problem is that the port is not that well mounted to the board and recently mine completely detached. Since this plug is the power supply as well as data, my FGDP-50 only lived for a few more hours. I contacted Yamaha and supplied them my receipt and they very graciously sent me a new one.
But, this is bound to happen again, especially if you use the device away from your studio and you are frequently disconnecting and reconnecting this cable. Also, if you play the FGDP-50 in bed or on your lap, there is a lot of opportunity to stress that connector and wear it out.
My solution is to permanently install a right angle USB connector on all my FGDP-50s. This one from Amazon works great:
Or a magnetic adapter. This is what I’ve been doing. If the cable janks, the magnetic connection just severs. Those magnetic cables often also come with USB-C and Micro adapters, so you could use the same cable and connect different devices on it.
I also just realized you can use an adaptor not just to avoid stressing out the main USB-micro jack, but also to convert it to USB-C, so this another option:
Damn, I’ve bought a few from Ebay which look just like yours, but they don’t work (the device is not being charged through them). I’ll try to get something from Amazon.
